Both regions are stunning, both have great hiking, and you can’t really go wrong. But they suit different trips.
Getting there
Kazbegi is about 3 hours from Tbilisi by road, so it works even for a 2-day trip. Svaneti is far: the road from Tbilisi to Mestia takes most of a day, so it needs at least 5 to 6 days to be worth it.
Landscape
Kazbegi is dramatic and close: Mount Kazbek (5,047m) and Gergeti Trinity Church above the town, the Juta valley, the mineral springs of Truso. Svaneti is wilder and greener, with glaciers, deep valleys and medieval stone towers in almost every village, up to Ushguli below Mount Shkhara.
Hiking
Kazbegi hikes are mostly 3 to 6 hours with around 400m of climbing. Svaneti hikes are similar in length, but the days are longer overall because of the driving. Neither requires technical skills. See how hard the hikes are.
Culture and stays
Kazbegi has comfortable hotels and guesthouses in Stepantsminda. In Svaneti you stay in Mestia, often in family guesthouses, and the Svan culture (towers, language, traditions) is a big part of the experience.
Season
Kazbegi: roughly June to early October for high trails. Svaneti: mid-June to September.
Our honest advice
- Short on time, or first time in Georgia? Kazbegi.
- A week or more and you love remote mountains? Svaneti.
- Want both? The 13-day Georgia Without Filters includes both.
